My story begins back in 2018 when I experienced a weight lifting injury in my lower back.  The initial MRI showed a 2 mm disc herniation. Despite attempting to correct this issue using the traditional conservative methods, after 12 months of pain, left leg numbness and atrophy things got even worse.  I was forced to stop working and went out on disability.  The pain I experienced was unrelenting and my function was reduced to only being able to lay in bed for most days.  The strain from this experience on my wife, my two boys and my practice was by far the worst part.  After a second MRI showing an increase in the size of the disc herniation to 14 mm I decided it was time to have the area repaired.  In May of 2019 I began my rehabilitation.  I really wanted to prove to myself and my family that I was still the energetic and capable man, spouse and father I had been before all of these challenges.  It was at that point that I decided to begin training for a triathlon.

I had originally set my sights on an olympic distance triathlon but then learned about Ironman and specifically the 70.3 distance.  The distances involved in this race honestly scare me, but I feel that if I can accomplish it, I will have truly come full circle and will have closed this three year chapter.  In order for me to participate in the Ironman Santa Cruz 70.3 race on September 12, 2021 I have committed to raising money for the Ironman Foundation.  My goal is $1750 by August 28th, 2021.  One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the following important causes; racial equality, COVID-19 support, purchasing bicycles for children in need, exercise education for at risk youth and hunger relief.

Each year, a select group of athletes from around the world race on TEAM IMF to support the mission of the IRONMAN Foundation. Together, we share a passion to create positive tangible change in our race communities and prove that "Anything Is Possible."

Since 2003, over $50 million has been provided through IRONMAN charitable giveback programs including the IRONMAN Foundation to more than 8,300 local, regional, national and global nonprofit initiatives. Through these partnerships, IRONMAN athletes are powerfully linked to the community and together we leave the IRONMAN legacy behind in our race communities long after race day. We #RaceForMore.
